EAUX investigates what gives this market town its winning charm

You might pass through the quiet village of Framlingham and see its chocolate box timber-framed buildings, pretty market square and curious Victorian pillar boxes – but this market town in the picturesque east Suffolk countryside offers far more than just postcard-perfect scenery.

Arrive at the newly refurbished Crown Hotel on Market Hill for luxurious contemporary accommodation in the heart of the village; each of the 14 rooms are individually styled, with four extra special feature rooms located within the historic timber-framed portion of the building. After unpacking your bags, take a seat in the onsite restaurant, where you’ll be served an array of delicious local food curated by talented Head Chef Chris Easters.

Once you’ve got your bearings, take a trip to the Grade I listed Framlingham Castle; built in the late 12th Century, this building was once at the centre of a web of power and influence, passing through the hands
of several enormously wealthy families until 1635 when it became a poorhouse and then a parish hall. Today, it is a popular attraction that features a historical exhibition, exploration trail and a beautiful picnic site.

Rest your legs at Paddy & Scott’s Café on Well Close Square, where you’ll find great tasting artisan coffee alongside a selection of patisserie favourites to re-energise you for the rest of your adventure. We recommend their Chit Chat blend for its deep rich caramel and earthy chocolate tones – perfect for sipping whilst discussing your plans for the day ahead!

For a fun and memorable experience, book a family photo shoot with Mark Palmer Photography on Market Hill. Surrounded by pretty boutiques, this studio is surprisingly quiet – ideal for creating a world of your own in front of the camera. Bring along props, outfit changes and even your pets; your photographer will do the rest.

A 10-minute drive from the town centre, Easton Farm Park is the ideal activity hub for young families. Interact with a variety of different farmyard animals, including goats, horses, sheep and pigs, before enjoying a delicious cream tea in the indoor barn café.

In need of some retail therapy? Framlingham offers an excellent selection of independent boutiques, championing local businesses as the fundamental core of the community. At designer fashion boutiques Darcy B, Boo Tiki and Impulse Fashion, you can find exciting and unique clothing and accessories for women, with styles to suit all ages. If it’s homeware you’re hungering for, Esme’s House, Two Peas and Ruby Tyger stock contemporary furnishings and décor – but for a one of a kind antique find, pop into Carley’s Yard, Dix Sept and Goodbrey Antiques.

Depending on which days you’ve chosen to stay in Framlingham, the village market is not to be missed. Taking place on Market Hill on Tuesdays and Saturdays, this historic market has been a regular event since 1285, and exhibits a range of local food and drink, art, crafts, fashion and home furnishings.
