Riddelsdell are proud to be able to offer their customers an attended petrol and diesel service and at the same time are always happy to check for tyre pressures, oil and fluids levels free of charge in-case they need topping-up.
Howard follows in the footsteps of his late father, Fred Watts who, in 1950, owned a large successful motor business, Car Sprayers Colchester, which later became M&F Watts of Colchester when his brother, Maurice, joined the business. Fast-forward 52 years to 2001 and Howard bought the freehold site of the Riddelsdell Brothers garage in Boxford, Suffolk.
At the tender age of 15, Howard was fully expecting to start work at his father’s car garage only to return home from school one day to be told he would not be doing any such thing. ‘He wanted me to gain valuable experience, life skills and a profession I was passionate about for myself. At sixteen I joined British Oxygen as a graduate apprentice in London and continued to buy and sell cars as a hobby.’ It was at the age of 10 when Howard decided he wanted to make cars his business.
Riddelsdell Brothers was established in 1900 and is now Europe’s oldest recorded working garage. It started by repairing traction engines as well as cars and making motorcycles. Howard purchased Riddelsdell in June 2001 and kept their name. ‘I loved the history of the garage and its location and centralised my business interests here in Boxford.’
Howard is passionate about his specialist car and tractor business and with his experienced team they ensure a customer focused bespoke service, offering a range of quality vehicles including new, used, classic, sport, competition and racing cars with 275 years combined experience. ‘I have always specialised in the cars that I have adored and respected since my late teens and my own collection includes Jaguar E Types, Porsche 911s and Ferraris,’ says Howard.
Howard’s team has a wealth of experience in sourcing and supplying all makes and models to customer requirements, having built longstanding relationships and partnerships with a selection of trade contacts from the main dealer and a classic network of suppliers. Their combined highly skilled teams experience equates to 275 years! ‘We specialise in being able to work on any vehicle from a 1900s steam car to the latest super car. Our garage, showroom, body shop, workshop, offices and dedicated team are all under one roof and we pride ourselves on reputation, trust and discretion. We welcome all visitors on-site.’
Due to customer demand Howard and his team have started to offer personalized and bespoke super car storage with a collection service (to one of three local train stations but helicopter landing co-ordination can be supplied on request) in a privately owned residential estate in Suffolk. The storage facility is dry, fully secure and situated in a confidential location.
Howard and his team’s passion for classic and super cars means they are well suited to maintaining these types of cars. It is imperative to look after the vehicle while in storage to stop its condition deteriorating. This is achieved through regularly charging the battery, keeping the vehicle in a cool, dry, dark environment and regularly running the vehicle. This prevents flat spots in the tyres, lubricates the engine, seals, clutch and brakes.
Howard welcomes anyone potentially interested in storage to come to his garage at Riddelsdell Brothers Ltd and to have a coffee and talk about the various options.
Fourteen years ago Riddelsdell celebrated 100 continuous years in the car trade. Howard says: ‘I love and cherish Riddelsdell and value our supportive, loyal customers and clients who allow us to look after your precious cars, super cars, classic cars, tractors and agricultural machinery, bicycles, lawn mowers. Howard never wants to retire and will ensure Riddelsdell continues to thrive and who ensure Riddelsdell continues to thrive.’
