EAUX talks to Vinnie Catani, Salon Director at Antonio Giovanni in The Saints
How long have been situated on The Saints, and what made you open a salon here instead of anywhere in Ipswich?
We’ve been in The Saints for three years now, and we chose this area because it’s up and coming and there are lots of lovely little boutiques and shops. Also, the character of the building really sold it to us.
Can you tell us something unusual about the heritage of the building?
Underneath the building itself, you can find a fantastic cellar with a domed ceiling – it would make a great space for an underground bar!
What makes your salon unique?
We try and tailor our services to clients’ individual needs; we’re not a generic salon. We sit down with each client and talk to them about what they really want from a haircut and make sure that the look works for them.
What’s your current favourite technique or haircut?
There isn’t really a haircut that is currently dominating the market, as there has been in previous times; however, if I had to pick my favourite, it would be the classic bob, which can be tweaked with some layering and graduation techniques.
We are finding that freehand colouring techniques are becoming more and more popular with clients, such as the ombre and balayage.
How would you describe The Saints to someone who had never visited the area?
I would say that it’s a great way to see a historic part of the town and soak up some of our culture. And if you’re looking for unique shops, it’s definitely the place to go.
The area was ranked in the top 5 in the Local Centre category in the Great British High Street awards; how does it feel to get this kind of recognition?
This is really brilliant! Over the years, we’ve seen a decline in the popularity of our main high street, so it’s excellent to be located in an area of the town that is recognised for its great shopping.
